CD-i Emulator + Digital Video
>> Tuesday, January 30, 2007
Can you imagine it's been 16 months since the first public release of CD-i Emulator? The first days were pretty hectic with loads of CD-i fans downloading the trial version for free. It was a very special day in CD-i history, because, after the failing attempts with Pete's CD-ICE project, this was the very first working Emulator for CD-i games. The past months we've seen several members asking what's happening with the current version of CD-i Emulator? We all know it doesn't yet allow Digital Video Support, but the fact we are able to emulate great games like The Apprentice, Pac-Panic and Super Mario's Wacky Worlds ofcourse is reason enough to keep interested in this project! Recently the author of CD-i Emulator posted some hints about upcoming events, including emulating Digital Video and enhancements like keyboard support. "I expect to resume serious work on CD-i emulator early 2007, but it's hard to make promises. But by all means hang on to those games, or at least keep disc images of them; MPEG support is still in the works..." Delays including a wonderful baby born, we wish cdifan all the best :D "I still have some tax forms to fill in and after that I hope to have time for CD-i Emulator again..."

Great post.. The cdi emulator has been very good and finally allowed me to experience two of the cd-i zelda games. Mind you the controls on those games were horrible. But, ahh imagine if they fixed the controls the game would be so much more fun.
I wonder if with the emulator
-Keyboard support
& Joypad support
could fix the issues slightly I doubt it. But, I'd really like to play through the games.
how about a way without the use of the cd-i bios files? it's very time-consuming to download this from your cd-i player, and most other emulators (for other consoles) don't have this kind of system either. Why is CD-i Emulator like this? Great piece of software without a doubt, I'm happy to use it!
I guess the whole bios thing is a major bummer. But, of course he tired and wasn't able to get the rights or something.
Enough work and you can find the files online. Plus if the emulator becomes functional enough, it will become more popular, meaning the bios will be more availible.

I guess you haven't used many other emulators then. The BIOS of the CD-i contains a whole operating system, you can't just leave it out. Ever emulated an Amiga, CDTV/CD32, 3DO or something similar? They all need a BIOS, and you'll never see such emulators not needing a BIOS.
CD-Ice did not use the BIOS of the player either.... so i guess it would still be possible ;) Maybe at a later stage, or isn't that possible now he took this road?
CD-ice was a high-level Rise of the Robots emulator, written by the coder of Rise of the Robots for CD-i! He knew how to get the game running without the bios. That doesn't change the fact the the bios is needed to fully emulate the CD-i. Ever wondered why CD-ice can't run anything else that Rise? Now you know it. ;)
Ofcourse ROTR was the start for CD-Ice, but the emulator was planned for all cd-i titles, right? Apparently it does run a little more than just ROTR by the way... It's not uncommon old developers for the system return to write an emulator ;)
It would be great to have an emulator that doesn't require the BIOS, but let's be honest, I'm highly thankful for CD-i Emulator as it comes now, and I believe his words that it would cost considerable more time to develop an emulator that doesn't require the BIOS. Keep wishing though, new developments may be around the corner...
The main struggle is that the files are copyrighted, although they're floating around the web! But, once you have it working, it feels more real, without a doubt a plus!
> Apparently it does run a little more than just ROTR by the way...
Any proofs? I read that somewhere else too long ago, but it was just talk with no one showing that CD-ice really can run anything beside Rise.
i can't even play Rise with CD-Ice! Am I the only one???!?
