Philips VCD Masterlist *update*
>> Monday, January 1, 2007
Starting this year, I'd like to pay more attention to CD-i titles other than games. Most importantly, Philips published over a 100 VCD titles, licensing titles from Paramount, MGM/UA, Orion and Live Entertainment to release a digital MPEG version for the first time ever.
CD-i member 'motley6':"Here is the Master List of Video Cd's released in the US from 1993-1996. I am not including children's titles or VCDs that don't have the Philips logo (i.e. documentaries like Icebound and movies like Cadillac Man and Force 10). Also included are the catalogue numbers."

I'm pretty sure the UK released titles contains a few titles which were never released here. The Terminator, FX Murder by Illusion, FX2 and Weekend at Bernies were not released in the UK. They certainly were never in the shops here or appeared on any release list I ever saw. I believe they were all released in the Netherlands. Akira and Ninja Scrolls were released but not by Philips, CD Visions released them in the UK. Hope that helps

Thanks! I will include them in the list, if you let me know any id, I can give you the credit!
I already found out, thanks again, dunc90!
There are also exclusive french and german specific videocd titles released by Philips, maybe I still have those, then I will let you know. Great list btw!
Hi,
here is some info on the Star Trek discs:
The US discs are all VideoCD's accept for Star Trek VI disc. ST IV US was (as far as I know) only released for Digital Video on CDI, so can only be played on CDI players.
The first star trek movie (the motion picture) has "special longer version" on the cover. this suggests that it is the longer TV version that was released on Laserdisc in the US, but when you watch the movie, you will realize it is just the normal version, so the "special longer version" is incorrect.
The UK disc for Star Trek VI the Undiscovered Country (811 1007, the picture you posted with this subject) was also a Digital video on CDI disc (so CDI only). The sound quality of the UK disc is truly awful! it's like the lowest possible bitrate mp3. (US version is better)
I believe I also saw a german version on ebay (also Digital video)
Philips also released all 7 versions in VideoCD format with Dutch subtitles (subtitles only when you play the disc in a CDI player)
Star Trek the motion picture (814 2022)
Star Trek II the wrath of khan (814 2010)
Star Trek III the search for spock (814 2014)
Star Trek IV the voyage home (814 2064)
Star Trek V the final frontier (814 2068)
Star Trek VI the undiscovered country (814 1108)
Star Trek Generations (814 2077)
The dutch VCD version of ST VI has MUCH better sound than the earlier UK DV on CDI version.
I also saw some star trek discs with Swedish subtitles on ebay, so there probably are A LOT more versions.
By the way,. what is this game in the CDI games list: "Star Trek - Philips POV"
I have never heard of it.was it released?
Thanks Bernard, I'm interested to find out more about all the regional translations and the differences in quality! Your remark "(subtitles only when you play the disc in a CDI player)" I guess is incorrect, as the subtitles are all baked in the same layer as the video signal, you can't turn on/off subtitles in a VideoCD formatted title.
The story behind Star Trek from Philips POV goes back when POV announced to create several movie licensed "Interactive Movies" like they did the same with Thunder in Paradise. They started this genre with Voyeur, introducing this to the world as a revolutionary new way of gaming. They signed a license with Paramount to use certain movie themes to create an interactive title. Star Trek was signed. Unfortunately, POV signed a deal with Warner after Philips had to close down the Media groups in 1995. Star Trek was never released and probably this was something for the drawing board only. But with CD-i: You'll never know!!
If you read the UK CDI magazine there were plans for a Star Trek Video game using full motion video. They comment on a Deep Space Nine game being the most likely being filmed at the same time as a series. Nothing was ever announced so it was probably just Philips PR machine in overdrive.
On your other point there was also an interesting article in the UK CDI magazine which commented on the differences between the UK and USA Video CD titles. Apparently the USA preferred a sharper image quality with more "blocking" while the Europeans preferred less blocking at the expense of the overall sharpness of picture. I can confirm from the UK and USA version of Live and Let Die that this does seem to be the case. The American disc looks better but does have a lot more blocking than the UK one.
Dunc
Hey Dunc, you should also try to track down ex-developers for CD-i... You'll find out there is more behind these small magazine posts than you'd think...
Hmm, what about the fact USA and UK releases were not published at the same time? So they had more time to use better techniques? Or differences between NTSC and PAL conversions? I'm just guessing, but it's hard to believe they changed the blocking/sharp image ratio to an apparently customers preference!
Bas, I believe we had this discussing on the CDinteractive forum:
Your remark "subtitles are all baked in the same layer as the video signal, you can't turn on/off subtitles in a VideoCD formatted title." is incorrect if you are watching VideoCD's on CDI.
The VideoCD format doesn't support subtitles, BUT VideoCD for CDI DOES.
These are NOT "baked in the same layer", they are in text format in a file on the disc and are automaticly displayed when you run the videoCD on a CDI player.
I believe it is a cost saving way for philips, that way they only had to encode the MPEG stream one time, and add different subtitles for different countries (in europe).
Using the latest version (4.x) of the VideoCD for CDI software (a version should be added in order to conform to VCD specs), I was not able to activate subtitles for CDI, it is in the manual, but strangly doesn't work.
Using the older 3.x software (the one included in most European videoCD's ), it does work, but this version doesn't have a working "on/of" switch, so it is always on when playing on a cdi player.
And the subtitles aren't displayed when using a DVD player, so that is the only way to turn them off.
Yes, I remember, and to be honest, as I never got to see any "proof", I always kept my doubts. So the VideoCD for CD-i format is again something different than "Digital Video on CD-i", then? You say you can play them on a DVD player, but then without subtitles, so I reckon you're talking about a VideoCD format? I thought the Philips Video CD's run on the same 'engine' software (only with different version numbers). Interesting subject!
Yes, it is just a normal VideoCD.
But Philips added a few CD-I only features to the VideoCD CD-I software player. The subtitles are an example.
Another example is that they added menu's on a VideoCD 1.1 disc using the 3.x player, these menus are also CD-I only. VideoCD 1.1 discs don't have menus according to the 1.1 specification.
All Philips VideoCD's with subtitles are released in this "subtitles for CDI only" format. It also says so on some of the later releases:
"Nederlandse ondertiteling uitsluitend bij afspelen op een CD-i speler, uitgebreid met Digital Video Cartridge"
Since you probably don't live in Holland (otherwise you would have known about the subtitle thing):
"Dutch subtitles only when played on a CD-i player upgraded with Digital Video cartridge"
If you still don't believe me, I could take pictures :-)
I think it's hard to create any picture proof no? Ofcourse I believe you, it's just that I feel ashamed I've never heard of it or never knew about it (I actually AM from NL!)
For those who don't believe CDI subtitles exist:
The disc I used:
A normal Philips VideoCD with dutch subtitles:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~schendst/CDI_Sub/ST5_1.JPG
http://www.xs4all.nl/~schendst/CDI_Sub/ST5_2.JPG
Two pictures of the movie on a CD-I:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~schendst/CDI_Sub/Kirk_sub.JPG
http://www.xs4all.nl/~schendst/CDI_Sub/Spock_sub.JPG
And two picture of the movie on a DVD player (somewhat the same moment, but the movie really has NO subtitles when played on a DVD player):

http://www.xs4all.nl/~schendst/CDI_Sub/spock_nosub.JPG
If you want more "proof", you could get a dutch philips videocd movie on www.marktplaats.nl or something
PS. I changed the urls, so they would fit, please remove the previous post dear moderator
You're right bernard, thanks again for the explanation! It's a very interesting subject, and I hope to find out more and complete the lists even more ;)
Great article this is what I had been looking for for many years so big thanks.
One question, is there any chance you could re do this list to include the non-philips titles but maybe in a separate list like the UK list, so people can see what exactly was all available? Just a question,
-
