As long as you have a gamepad controller that can house some space for some wires and the pcb of the thumbstick you can mod your CD-i thumbstick into a gamepad. The thumbstick (and other CD-i controllers) have a custom chip so you can't just solder the cords of a CD-i pad and another gamepad to each other. Many CD-i users complaint about the usability of the thumbstick with games although you know the thumbstick was not designed to play games with. If you have no alternative you might find this tutorial useful, written by Korvkiosksgubben.
Can you see the original thumbstick pcb? Does it have the smallest pcb of all cd-i controllers? It would make it easier to fit into other gamepads!
